Annual Campus Crime Statistics
The information contained in these web pages is intended to assist the Mount Vernon Nazarene Campus Safety Department with compliance to the requirements established in the Campus Crime Reporting Act, also referred to as the Clery Act.
The document contains crime statistics reported o have occurred
on campus, in specific buildings owned or leased by the University
and on public property or immediately adjacent to campus. The
report also includes institutional polices relating to campus
security, policies such as the reporting of crimes. The campus
crime statistics are cataloged by calendar year and are added
to the annual crime report by the month of October each year.
The report is presented on a three-year calender format. For
example, the 2001 crime report will include statistics from 1998,
1999, and 2000. Department incidents and records are maintained
for a seven-year time period.

Campus Reporting Procedures
GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR REPORTING A CRIME, EMERGENCY
OR SAFETY RELATED INCIDENT OCCURRING ON CAMPUS
All members of the campus community, Faculty, Staff, Students and Guests are encouraged to report any knowledge of crimes and community related incidents to the Campus Safety Department in a timely fashion.
To report a crime or emergency on the Mount Vernon Campus call Campus Safety at ext. 4000.
To report a non-emergency or safety related matter call Campus Safety at ext.4460.
Reporting of Crime
It is important to remember although the law allows for anonymous
crime reporting, certain crimes may not be fully processed by
either the campus judicial or local authorities with out the
credible testimony of the witness.
Access to Campus Facilities
With certain exceptions Academic and Administrative buildings
are open during normal business hours between 8:00 a.m. to 5:00
p.m. Monday through Friday. Residential areas are accessible
to resident students and approved guests only.
Campus Safety Personnel
Mount Vernon Nazarene University provides uniformed personnel to respond to the needs of the campus community on a 24 hour 7 day week basis. Officers receive training in various subjects related to security and do not carry arrest authority. Campus Safety maintains a working relationship with the Mount Vernon City Police Department as well as other local emergency response agencies.
Daily Crime Log
Campus Safety maintains a log of crime occurring on or adjacent to campus and is available within a 48 hour time period. The log contains information regarding incidents, which include the commission of crime. Information containing personal identity is not included in the log. Information such as Date, Time, Nature, Location, and Disposition of the incident is recorded.
Timely Warning
Timely warnings are given to community members of Mount Vernon
Nazarene University when a crime or substantial threat is believed
to exist, therefore representing a risk to the members of the
campus community. The warnings will be delivered by sending email
messages to all campus members.
Prohibited Items
The following items are not permitted on campus. Alcoholic Beverages,
Tobacco Products. Firearms and other incendiary devices such
as fireworks or homemade explosive devices. Illegal drugs are
also prohibited. Individuals found in possession of any of the
above mentioned items are subject to campus discipline and any
federal, state, and or local violations of law.
Personal Safety
Personal safety tips are made available to the Mount Vernon Nazarene
University campus community using the acronym PREVENT.
Prevention is the most effective means of fighting
crime. Walk with friends or an escort, lock your doors and engrave
your valuables.
Report in as much detail as possible any suspicious persons or incidents. Do not try to question or detain anyone yourself. Contact Campus Safety immediately at ext. 4000 on any University telephone, or on any of the yellow colored emergency phones located on campus.
Escape is your primary objective if you become involved
in a dangerous situation. Do not attempt a physical confrontation
if escape is possible.
Value your safety and the safety of others. Do not
let apparent convenience outweigh security and safety considerations.
Make a habit of being safety conscious.
Exercise common sense and awareness in your day-to-day
activities. There is no need to be fearful, however, use reasonable
caution.
Notify authorities when you observe potential criminal
or suspicious activity.

Missing Property Report
If you think you have been a victim of a theft, please take
some time to fill out and submit the missing
property report.
Motor Vehicle Registration
Students need to register their vehicles every year (one vehicle per student, including motorcycles) through the Vehicle Registration Form. You must be confirmed to register. You will receive your parking decal in your campus mailbox after you have officially opened your mailbox by signing a card at the MVNU Post Office window. If siblings share a vehicle, please let Campus Safety know so that two parking permits may be issued.
