King, whose favorite medium is oil painting, takes much of his inspiration for his work from everyday life, from current events and contemporary media to personal experiences and day dreams. He approaches his work knowing that art that possesses its own universal language that can express certain thoughts and feelings. His pieces are intended to evoke an inspiration from his audience that motivates them to accept their own interpretations of art, embracing what they feel.

King’s 40-plus years of experience in art began when he was a child as he was encouraged by his family. His formal education started with a degree from the Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD) in illustration, emphasizing drawing and painting, then continued at Boston University with an MFA in painting. He had a teaching fellowship at Wichita State University for a semester in 1981 and has taught at CCAD since 1985, where he was the chairperson of the Illustration Department for seven years and is now a senior faculty member in illustration.

King’s work has been recognized both around the U.S. and internationally, being featured in exhibitions in the South Bend Regional Museum of Art, the Beverly Art Center (Chicago), in Europe at the Magyar Academy of Art (Budapest) and the Kulturrathaus (Dresden), and in South America at the Centro Cultural Recoleta (Buenos Aires). His design and illustration has been published by "Oprah” magazine, "Journal of the CG Jung Institute of New York, ” AIGA and the American Illustration Annuals and Artisan Press.
