Under the old format, students took classes two nights per week and were considered part-time. Under the new format, students are considered full-time, and they will complete social work courses one at a time, attending class one night per week for eight weeks. The reformatted program is designed to be completed in about two years.

"The program is geared toward adults primarily in the field of social sciences,” said Karen Boyd, chair of the Social Work Department. “This allows them to increase their job opportunities in the field of social work while maintaining their current responsibilities.”

The program is open to candidates with two years of work experience or a two-year degree in human services.

Students already enrolled in or accepted to the program will continue in the new format.

According to the U. S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, social work is one of the fastest growing careers in the United States. Professional social workers are employed in many fields of practice, such as mental health, chemical dependency, child welfare, criminal justice, community organization, health care and education.

Completing a social work degree allows graduates to sit for the state licensing exam. A license is a prerequisite to obtaining many social work positions. MVNU’s social work program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

Courses in the non-traditional social work program will be offered at the University’s Mount Vernon campus. Classes are scheduled to begin September 16.
