FYI Conference brings today’s youth issues to life

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- The three-day Focusing on Youth Issues conference will be held at Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Tuesday through Thursday, June 17-19, 2008.

The conference is designed for anyone working with youth, including teachers, guidance counselors, court workers, social workers, Scout leaders, church youth directors and more. FYI offers more than 30 sessions from which to choose, an opportunity to earn continuing education units, continental breakfast and lunch each day, valuable networking and optional college credit ($200 per graduate education credit at MVNU).

Each morning starts with a keynote address. These include: “The Transformational Power of Thought,” by Dr. Walter Kania from American Management and Personnel Consultants; “Looking Beneath the Surface at Modern Day Slavery,” by Theresa Flores from Prevent Child Abuse Ohio; and “Schools Today: More than a Building,” by Steve Short, Mount Vernon City Schools Superintendent.

Sessions throughout the day range in subject matter from sensory processing in children, ADHD in the classroom, drug addiction, ethics, diversity, childhood obesity, children of divorce, strategies for connecting with kids and so much more. Presenters are seasoned professionals with strong educational training and years of experience in a variety of social science fields.

Interested individuals can register for the full three-day conference, or may choose to attend one or two of the days. The cost for three-day registration is $75 before June 2 and $90 after June 2.

FYI is sponsored by Community Mental Health and Recovery Board, Moundbuilders Guidance Center, MVNU and United Way of Knox County.
